Reporter Nellie Bly feigns lunacy and gets admitted to Blackwell asylum for “treatment” which fuels her periodicals published after her executed rescue 10 days into her stay.
Blackwell is in dire need of funding. Once founded as a charity of good works it is now in disrepair and a deposit for the cities disturbed and simply the cities misunderstood. (After Nellie Bly's investigations it was determined that many women in Blackwell simply didn't speak English, but otherwise were perfectly sane).
Orderlies at Blackwell were often inmates from the penitentiary next door and had no interest or knowledge of science.
Guests to the Alienist may choose the level of participation they would prefer. If Guests would like to participate less they will be treated as potential donors of Blackwell and be shown demonstrations of examinations and treatment explanations. Those who wish to immerse themselves more fully will be treated as newly admitted patients.
